Writer-director Janardhan Chikkanna, known for the cyber thriller Gultoo, is now venturing into the realm of comedy with his latest film, Powder. According to him, crafting and delivering comedy poses a significant challenge. He was also responsible for adding the final touches to the film, particularly enhancing the climactic sequences with extensive VFX work. Janardhan emphasized that they have pushed the visual boundaries typically associated with comedy films, especially in the concluding 20 minutes of Powder. While most comedy films often operate with restricted budgets, relying on dialogues and situations for humor, Powder also incorporates visual comedy in its closing segments.
In a discussion, Janardhan highlighted the appeal of "clean comedies" in drawing larger crowds to cinemas. He pointed out that unlike other genres, comedy allows viewers to unwind and enjoy the film without the need for intense focus. This was a key objective behind Powder—to offer an entertaining and relaxing viewing experience that can be enjoyed repeatedly, even when familiar with the storyline.
Moreover, Janardhan expressed admiration for the ensemble cast featured in Powder, describing them as a standout feature of the film. He appreciated the opportunity to collaborate with such a talented and diverse group of actors, each bringing their own unique skills and experiences to their respective roles. Janardhan aimed to ensure that every character in the film received proper development and closure, utilizing the cast's strengths to maximize the comedic potential of each individual. This approach, he believes, allowed them to extract humor effectively from the ensemble without solely relying on screen time.Comedy has never been my strong suit, but I find it to be an experimental genre. I am primarily a writer of thrillers, and I find that ideas come effortlessly when I dive into the world of crime thrillers. Transitioning from a serious genre to comedy was challenging for me. However, I believe that comedy offers a wide range of opportunities for experimentation, and I have put in my best efforts to explore this genre.
